The Power of Three Aspects in Coaching.
Tangible Results – Science – Art = Transformation
1. STRUCTURE – TANGIBLE RESULTS.
How do you demonstrate tangible results in coaching?
Coaching often deals with things that are difficult to measure: confidence, resilience, perspective, values, motivation and personal growth.
A visual model can make this development more visible.
The Salutogenic Coaching Model provides a framework for exploring your priority values, talents and skills, placing them at the centre of your development.
As the coaching journey progresses, the model offers a way to observe how different elements develop, connect and influence one another. In other words, you don’t simply talk about change.
You can see your progress unfolding.
The model was developed and researched by three coaches — Dee Gray, Ambra Burls and Marina Kogan — and published in the International Journal of Evidence-Based Coaching and Mentoring in 2014.
But a model is only one part of the story. To understand meaningful change, we also need science.
2. SCIENCE — THE BRAIN AND THE POSSIBILITY OF CHANGE
Neuroscience gives us valuable insight into how change happens.
At its heart is the concept of neuroplasticity — the brain’s capacity to adapt and form new neural connections throughout life.
This matters in coaching because our brains are not simply fixed systems. Through learning, repetition and experience, we can develop new skills, establish new habits and strengthen different ways of thinking and responding. Think of it as creating a new route.
The more often you use it, the more familiar it becomes.
Coaching can support this process by creating opportunities to:
- recognise patterns
- experiment with new approaches
- reinforce helpful behaviours
- develop emotional regulation
- turn insight into action
This is where neuroscience becomes practical: New habits. New skills. New perspectives. New possibilities.
But there is another dimension to coaching that science alone cannot capture.
3. ART – THE SPACE FOR DISCOVERY.
Coaching is also an art.
It is the creative space between the question and the answer. The space where curiosity takes over. Where you explore possibilities that may not have been obvious before. Where you can challenge assumptions, experiment with different perspectives and perhaps discover something you were not consciously looking for.
“Art provides the answers to questions no one has asked.” – Michail Piotrovsky
Your coach becomes your thinking partner in this process and asks those questions.
Not someone who gives you the answers, but someone who helps you explore the questions. There can be structure, but also spontaneity. There can be challenge, but also playfulness. There can be serious thinking, and occasionally a little drama and comedy along the way. Because meaningful development is not always a straight line. Sometimes the most valuable insight comes from an unexpected direction.
Science. Art. Discovery. Progress.
Science provides the foundation.
Art creates the space for discovery.
And the Salutogenic Coaching Model provides a visual framework through which you can observe your development and progress.
Together, they create a coaching experience that is both grounded and exploratory, structured and creative, measurable and deeply personal.

- You may begin with a question.
- You may discover something unexpected.
- You may experience a breakthrough.

And gradually, through reflection and practice, you may begin to see that change reflected in the way you think, act and lead.
That is what coaching means to me. Not simply finding answers. But creating the conditions in which better questions, new possibilities and meaningful change can emerge.
And perhaps your next breakthrough begins with a question you haven’t asked yet.
